Jellyfish

Megan Markham
Poetry

I keep thinking about jellyfish

&

plastic bags.

A crumpled heap of bullseye-covered ones stinging my feet

when the reusables were left at home.

PSAs from my school years reminding us to cut six pack rings,

more packaging than I asked for or know what to do with

covering us head to toe – K-Cup to vitamin pack

the capitalists disregard so silently loud that

I’ve curled up in a shell while choking on a plastic bag.

My internal monologue a Discovery Channel fun fact break-bumper:

“more people die annually from coconuts hitting them than sharks attacks”

&

“did you know? sea turtles eat jellyfish”
